Consequences of Not Treating Arthritis the Right Way
There are many ways of treating arthritis, however the right treatment will ensure long-lasting and pain free knee movement for a very long time. I would like to highlight the consequences of treating severe arthritis using medication and surgery.
1. Medication - For those taking medication prescribed by the doctors which include NSAIDs, there are side effects to the vital organs and this may do more harm than good in the long term. The side effects for taking these NSAIDs include
Stomach ulcers
Increased bleeding tendency
Headaches and Dizziness
Allergic reactions such as rashes, wheezing and throat swelling
Liver and kidney problems
High blood pressure
Leg swelling
Heart attacks and strokes
For those suffering from severe arthritis, they have to take large doses of NSAIDs to get the necessary pain relief. If anyone were to consume these medications for long periods of time ( more than 6 months), there is high chance of exposing oneself to the above-mentioned side effects which could be serious and cause severe health complications. Although NSAIDs is useful in providing short term relief, it must never be used continuously.
2. Surgery
Severe arthritis may require people with serious knee problem to undergo surgery. Many surgeries have been carried out successfully to benefit the people with severe knee problem but at the same time there have been occasions when surgeries have failed. If the surgery has failed, the knee replacement joint has to be removed and this will be costly, painful and time-consuming especially when you are in deep pain for your immobility. In some countries you can do the surgery almost immediately whereas in other countries there may be a waiting period. The recovery period for a total knee replacement may be as long as 6 months for most patients to regain their fully active levels. Another thing to remember is that the knee joint replacement is synthetic, it takes time to adjust to your knee movements and strides when you are walking. It will not be the same as your natural joint.
For people going for an operation for their knee joint, you may want to consider these 4 factors,
i) What are the chances of the operation being successful?
